Volver a casa Coming Home
Desde pequeña quise tener un perro.
I have wanted a dog since I was a little girl.
No recuerdo haberlo decidido.
I don't remember ever deciding it. It was one of those certainties that seem to have always been there. I imagined a furry, four-legged best friend with whom I could share the things that, even then, I sensed made life good: being perfectly content at home and going out into nature.
Pasaron los años. Crecí. Fui madre.
The years went by. I grew up. I became a mother. Life filled with people, responsibilities, work, diaries and plans.
But I never gave up on that dream. And one day, thanks to my husband (“husband” is a word that somehow falls short of who he is), the dream became real.
Koly was born on September 4, 2020, in Guadalajara.
Two months later, I saw her photograph on a breeder's website and went to find her. She was with her four litter sisters. Five puppies together. Koly was the whitest, the liveliest and, at least to me, the most beautiful.
También fue la primera que me miró.
She was also the first to look at me.
No sabía cómo cogerla.
I didn't know how to hold her.
It seems strange to remember that now, because I had already held my own children in my arms, but that little white creature seemed so fragile that I was afraid even of holding her too tightly.
La abracé suavemente.
I held her gently.
And I knew she was a new part of me.
Han pasado seis años.
Six years have passed.
Ahora sé perfectamente cómo abrazarla.
Now I know exactly how to hold her.
—Hooolaaa... Y entonces lo escucho. Ese sonido.
Some days I get home after half past nine at night. I step out of the lift with that particular kind of tiredness that comes after a long day and start searching for my keys inside an enormous bag where diaries, papers, keys and far too many things coexist. I open the door. —Hellooo... And then I hear it. That sound.
Before I see her, I hear her paws trotting softly across the parquet floor.
Koly doesn't wait anxiously by the door. She comes calmly from the living room, along the little hallway that separates her world from mine.
By the time she appears, my suitcase of a bag has practically fallen to the floor and I'm on my knees.
—Kooolyyy... Hola, preciosa.
—Kooolyyy... Hello, beautiful.
Le revuelvo las orejas colganderas. Los mofletes. —¿Cómo estás? ¿Te has portado bien con papá?
I ruffle her floppy ears. Her cheeks. —How are you? Have you been good for Dad?
Y después la miro.
And then I look at her.
I think it almost every day, and on many of them I say it out loud too:
—Pero ¡qué bonita es usted!
—But aren't you beautiful!
Sometimes I wrap my arms around her and gently rock with her from side to side.
Other times, I end up lying flat on the floor while Koly licks my face (yes: as a doctor, I absolutely do not recommend this behaviour). And there we stay.
Hasta que las dos nos relajamos.
Until we both relax.
Then I get up, walk towards the kitchen or the bedroom, and she stays beside me, pressed against my legs.
El bolso sigue en la entrada.
The bag is still in the hallway.
El día puede esperar unos minutos.
The day can wait a few minutes.
He vuelto a casa.
I've come home. I understood a long time ago that home was never exactly the house.

Todas las mañanas salimos a pasear.
Every morning we go for a walk.
Casi siempre a la misma hora.
Almost always at the same time.
Las 8:20.
8:20.
We go to the park. It's enormous. There are ponds, fountains, canals, flowers, stones, dirt paths and vast stretches of grass.
We've been walking through it for years, and we still haven't taken exactly the same walk twice.
El lugar permanece. El paisaje cambia.
The place remains. The landscape changes.
El verde desaparece y regresa. Cambia la luz. Cambian las flores. Cambia la temperatura. El agua ocupa lugares distintos. Las hojas aparecen y después caen.
The green disappears and returns. The light changes. The flowers change. The temperature changes. Water occupies different places. Leaves appear and then fall.
Nosotras también cambiamos.
We change too.
Koly walks on a very long lead. She could move almost ten metres away from me, although she rarely does. She prefers to keep a middle distance, where she can investigate every scent without ever losing me completely from sight.
Porque yo miro el parque.
Because I look at the park.
Koly lo olfatea.
Koly smells it.
In summer, she knows exactly where to find the damp places. When the heat becomes intense, she can discover water before I do and set off running towards it, pulling on the lead until she manages to get in.
Con los perros es selectiva.
She's selective with dogs.
Con las personas, bastante menos.
Rather less so with people.
If someone crouches down to stroke her, Koly immediately understands the opportunity. She rolls onto her back, offers her belly and waits.
When she's particularly content, she opens her mouth and lets her very long tongue fall from one corner.
We play too. If I throw her a stick, she runs to fetch it.
Me gusta hacerlo.
The problem is that she has no intention of giving it back. I learned a long time ago that it's more practical to find another stick. When she's off the lead, she runs around, wanders away and comes back. She teases me into chasing her. Even while she's exploring, she checks where I am. At the end of the walk, I brush her.
Otras simplemente pienso.
I like doing it. Her coat becomes soft and shiny and, for a few minutes, there is nothing but the brush, her and me. The walk usually lasts an hour. Some days, almost two. During that time, I observe. The vegetation. The temperature. A light that wasn't there yesterday. A corner I want to photograph. People hurrying towards work. Sometimes I listen to a podcast. Sometimes I call someone in my family. Other times I simply think. Walking with Koly has become a form of meditation.
Una hora de atención.
An hour of attention.
Perhaps part of the good life is simply this: realising that it is happening while it happens. I understood a long time ago that home was never exactly the house.

Los fines de semana dormimos la siesta.
At weekends, we take a nap.
There are two white sofas in the living room, one three-seater and one two-seater. We bought them in leather precisely because of Koly.
No tenemos sitio asignado.
We don't have assigned places.
Yo duermo en uno.
I sleep on one.
Ella en el otro.
She sleeps on the other.
Or the other way round. There is a moment that has happened so many times that it has become part of how I understand our relationship.
Abro los ojos.
I open my eyes.
No me he levantado. No he hablado. Creo que ni siquiera me he movido.
I haven't got up. I haven't spoken. I don't think I've even moved.
Miro hacia el otro sofá.
I look towards the other sofa.
Y Koly abre los ojos.
And Koly opens her eyes.
Casi al mismo tiempo.
Almost at the same time.
Nunca he sabido cómo lo hace.
I've never known how she does it.
Perhaps she senses an imperceptible change in my breathing. Perhaps I've made some tiny movement without realising it.
O quizá simplemente quiera pensar que estamos sincronizadas. Me gusta esta última explicación. Nos quedamos mirándonos desde nuestros respectivos sofás. No ocurre nada.
Or perhaps I simply like to think we're in sync. I prefer that explanation. We lie there looking at each other from our respective sofas. Nothing happens. And precisely because of that, the moment contains almost everything I need.
No lo cambiaría por nada.
I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Ronronea.
Koly doesn't need very much to happen either. She has taken over our home with absolute ease. She knows the warmest areas of the underfloor heating in winter and the cool currents from the air conditioning in summer. While I work, she sleeps at the foot of my desk or settles on a sofa from where she can keep an eye on me simply by opening one eye. She sleeps on her side on the floor. In bed, however, she seems to consider almost any position acceptable. She purrs.
Ronca.
She snores.
Hace pequeños ruidos.
She makes little noises.
And when I can't resist going over to kiss her while she's asleep, she may huff softly and turn her head away with considerable clarity. Unconditional love doesn't mean having no boundaries.
At night, if she hears an unexpected noise, she barks as though she were prepared to defend the house against any threat.
A veces sin levantarse siquiera del sofá.
Sometimes without even getting off the sofa.
—How can you make such a fuss when you aren't even moving?! She seems to consider guarding the home and remaining comfortable perfectly compatible. At night, she sleeps with us. If she takes up too much space, we usually adjust our positions around her.
When she gets too warm or has had enough, she climbs down onto the floor. And there is another sound I know perfectly: the jump that, sometime in the middle of the night, announces that she has decided to come back to bed.
Medio dormida, le hago sitio.
Half asleep, I make room for her.

Living with Koly has changed my relationship with time.
Caring for someone who depends on you forces you to return constantly to the present.
Hay que salir aunque llueva.
You have to go out even when it rains.
Aunque nieve.
Even when it snows.
You have to leave whatever you were doing because it's time to go to the vet.
You have to interrupt a working day because someone has decided that now is a good time to play.
You have to accept that a certain piece of wooden furniture now bears the unmistakable marks of a set of teeth.
Cuidar da trabajo.
Caring takes work.
But it also puts things back where they belong.
A look can change a plan in a second. And perhaps that is one of the things Koly has taught me most. Here. Now.
Aquí. Ahora.
There is also an awareness that is difficult to ignore when we share our lives with a dog.
Their time and ours are measured differently. They may accompany us through an extraordinarily important chapter of our lives. We, if we are fortunate, can accompany them through all of theirs. From beginning to end. There is something painful in that asymmetry. But something profoundly beautiful too.
Because when we know something is finite, we learn to look at it differently.
Time stops being something that simply passes.
Se convierte en algo que cuidamos.
It becomes something we care for.
A dog doesn't waste a morning remembering an argument from yesterday.
She doesn't spend today's walk worrying about the one next Tuesday. There is water.
Corre hacia ella.
She runs towards it.
Encuentra un olor.
She finds a scent.
Lo investiga.
She investigates it.
Aparece alguien querido.
Someone she loves appears.
Y mañana vuelve a hacerlo.
She rejoices as though the world had just begun. And tomorrow she does it all again.
Koly constantly reminds me of something we humans forget with extraordinary ease:
que la vida sólo sucede en presente.
that life only happens in the present.
Perhaps that is why, when I watch her, I so often think about gratitude.
Koly is, for me, a state of contemplation.
Es meditar caminando.
She is meditation while walking.
She is watching the seasons unfold across the same landscape.
She is a silent prayer of thanks for one more day with her.
And sometimes I simply meet her gaze and the first thing I think is: I love you, little sister.
Algún día todo esto habrá cambiado.
One day, all of this will have changed.
El parque seguirá allí y será distinto.
The park will still be there, and it will be different.
El agua continuará recorriendo fuentes, canales, ríos y mares.
Water will continue flowing through fountains, canals, rivers and seas.
Otros pies caminarán sobre la misma tierra.
Other feet will walk upon the same earth.
Other beings will follow the scents carried by the same winds.
El mismo Sol calentará otras mañanas. La misma Luna aparecerá sobre otras ventanas.
The same Sun will warm other mornings. The same Moon will appear above other windows.
And other people will look up at the starry sky and feel emotions probably very similar to ours. We are only a brief interval. That doesn't make our lives less important. It makes them unrepeatable. Because we all walk upon the same earth and yet no life ever happens in quite the same way again. Perhaps caring also means understanding this. Caring for those who are alive now. Caring for the earth we received from those who came before us. And leaving it for those who have yet to arrive.

I don't know exactly what will remain of all these days.
Sé lo que me gustaría conservar.
I know what I would like to keep.
La curiosidad de Koly.
Koly's curiosity.
Her discerning and, at the same time, unguarded way of smelling the world.
Su alegría inagotable ante el reencuentro.
Her inexhaustible joy at being reunited.
The ability to discover something different in a familiar place. The awareness that changing and remaining are not opposites.
And her way of bringing me back, again and again, to the only place where life can truly find us. Here. Now. Tomorrow, at 8:20, we'll probably return to the same park. Koly will stop again at some scent that wasn't there yesterday.
Yo volveré a mirar alguna luz que tampoco estaba. Caminaremos sobre la misma tierra. Y será otro día completamente distinto. Después volveremos a casa.
I'll notice some light that wasn't there either. We'll walk upon the same earth. And it will be another completely different day. Then we'll come home. I understood a long time ago that home was never exactly the house.
